We favor the ultrasonic "phased-array" technique for the inspection of pins, especially od larger diameter. Since the technique covers a wide range of angles simultaneously, the sensitivity and the probability of detection are greatly improved over conventional ultrasonic testing.

Advantages :

  • Excellent sensitivity
  • Simple and quick to execute

To consider :

  • The end of the bolts must be flat and accessible
  • It is best to inspect from both ends when possible

We mainly propose the use of "phased-array" ultrasonic testing for the inspection of large shafts, whether they are accessible by the ends or by the circumference surface. This technique makes it possible to cover several angles simultaneously so as to obtain a two-dimensional coverage, which makes it possible to identify the regions of interest well and to achieve an excellent probability of detection.

Advantages :

  • Fast and efficient inspection

To consider :

  • Couplant must be applied to the contact surface
  • Having the design drawing of the part greatly helps for the interpretation of hidden sections

Magnetic particles non-destructive testing method is very efficient and simple to perform. It detects defects emerging at the surface in ferromagnetic materials. A magnetic yoke is generally used to create the magnetic field.

Different Techniques:

  • Dry powder (yellow or red)
  • Black particles on a white background ("black & white")
  • Fluorescent particles (in dark environment)

Advantages :

  • Fast and effective
  • Excellent probability of detection
  • Applicable on various geometries
  • The dry powder technique is applicable at high temperature

To note :

  • Applicable only to ferromagnetic materials
  • Detection of surface defects, or very close to the surface, only
  • Requires a clean surface (no grease)

Technician Certifications:

  • ASNT, SNT-TC-1A, Magnetic Particles, Level 2
  • CGSB, Magnetic Particles, Level 2
